This picture was taken a few yards to the right of the famed "Copse of Trees" that was the objective of Pickett's Charge on July 3rd, 1863. For me, it's hard to see 13,000 men come out from the trees in the distance and march across an open field into devastating fire. There are accounts which state that in many cases, entire RANKS of men would drop dead at the same time, and form perfect rows...I just can't see that...too destructive, I think. Anyways, to show how bad the fire was, of the 13,000 Confederates engaged, only 6,000 came back...Gettysburg is a thought provoking place... Edit: and for those who are interested, I am standing near where the Confederates broke through Union lines, under Gen. Armistead--about twenty yards behind me is the marker that shows the place where he was mortally wounded. At this point, the 12th, 15th, and 19th Massachusetts regiments fixed bayonets and charged the Confederates who had broken through. I have to admire the 1st Minnesota Regiment (272 men), who on July 2nd, under the orders of General Hancock, fixed bayonets and charged an entire brigade of Alabamans (850 men or so). Of 272 Minnesotans, only 47 were left standing at the end of the engagement, but they beat back the Confederates, despite the disparity in numbers. Ok, more pictures later, but with shorter captions and less Civil War trivia which I will forget within two days. Friday, July 23, 2004
Only a couple people actually went out of their way to come to my room and say good-bye to me (well, other than my residents--they had no choice except to come say adieu). Kinda hurt because of all the different groups I hung out with a whole lot. I'm not hurt too much because they were all off on their way homes as quickly as possible, and I'd rather them say last good byes to each other than to me. I snapped out at Jeannine today...way to fucking go, Tych. Now you know why they call you "Psycho Tycho"...........we also need to talk later. Anyways, moved out, got home. The actual pain hasn't really set in yet, just being very listless. I think the program was a success. Almost everyone loved it. I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I was not able to meet a beautiful woman who sat on a bench out on the quad on every day who I might have been able to give the time to and see if she was feeling okay...damn...just to think how very lucky I might have been......... Ah well, no use crying over what might have been :-P. I want cake. Give me cake. Lots of it. Now. Or else III'''''LLLLLLLLLL EEEEEAAAAAATTTTTTT YYYYYYYYYOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRR SSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLL!!! (<$BlogItemCommentCount$>) comments Thursday, July 22, 2004
Frontiers is going great. I'd say more, but I can't think of the good times right now. I'm on the verge of tears. I feel like I'm about to throw up, very sick, very depressed. The first part of this is that Frontiers ends tomorrow morning. But then I am completely emotionally drained. I think I've lost Jeannine. (<$BlogItemCommentCount$>) comments Sunday, July 04, 2004
![]() Again, my brilliant cameramanship. I should get paid for this. Anyways, this is a picture of the Boston skyline from Squantum, towards UMass Boston, the gas tank, and the expressway. Saturday, July 03, 2004
![]() Marky, Chris, Nick (Chris's cousin Nick), "Little Dude", Steph, Matt, and Nick preparing to light off some fireworks. "Little Dude" never quite figured out that you're supposed to light then run, not light, then touch. ![]() Could barely get within ten feet of the fire at this point without getting physically burned. As it stands, I now have burns on my face and arms due to going too close. As do many others. ![]() Picture taken shortly before having facial hair partially singed off. At least I won't have to shave tomorrow! ![]() The beginnings of the Squantum Bonfire. It was lit in three more locations. I took this picture shortly before I scrambled on top of the pile to reposition my bag-o-stuff. Well, the one that hadn't been burned yet. ![]() Another picture of the big pile. For a sense of scale, the person standing there is just over six feet tall. Not really. He's about four and a half feet. HE TRIED TO STEAL ME LUCKY CHARMS! ![]() This is the pile before being set alight. It got bigger for a while, too, because wood kept being thrown on. I had myself a good old fashioned book burning. ![]() Here is Nick, after losing (yet another) game of "Mumble the Peg". He's getting better. Next time I wouldn't be surprised if this were me. ![]() Yes, me, the best cameraman of all time. Us playing Bocce before heading off to the bonfire. Nick and I teamed up, and we did ok...didn't hit any birds or anything this time around.
Jeannine came up and spent the day...more info later!
